Where our data comes from

We only use information that is lawfully public or openly licensed, and we record where and when each important data point was observed.

Business listings

Places and suburbs

GeoNames gazetteer, licensed under Creative Commons Attribution 4.0. geonames.org.

Websites

Each business's own public website, visited by PitchlightBot, which follows robots.txt and identifies itself.

Public registers and notices

Where available and openly licensed: business registers (for example Australia's ABN Bulk Extract, CC BY 3.0 AU, and the UK's Companies House data, Open Government Licence v3.0) and public procurement notices (for example AusTender and Find a Tender). We show these as the source when we use them.

What we don't use

  • No scraping of Google Maps, Google Business Profiles or social networks.
  • Nothing behind a login, paywall or access control.
  • No purchased personal-data lists.
